32. Magic Hat – Elder Betty

I missed last week, and I’m late today.  I’m like the absent-minded beerfessor.

Here come my excuses!  This past weekend was Sandblast.  Which, in case you didn’t know, was incredible!  I and the rest of Bandit’s Trans Am were out on Montrose Beach running around in the sand playing ultimate for 2 days.  Since I was the captain, I spent the majority of last week trying to get all the final details sorted out (hence the missed post last week), and I’m still currently worn out and sore from playing (hence the lateness today).  Now that that’s all cleared up, let’s talk.

Sandblast was a ton of fun.  We played hard, lost harder, but laughed the hardest.  There are even pictures of me drinking from a championship trophy (don’t get too excited, we didn’t win).

Here we are in all our glory:

Now, beer.  Sadly, I didn’t have a single beer while on the beach.  Unless you want to count that Bud Light Lime I chugged from the trophy, which I’m going to pretend was something much better.  I did however enjoy John Daly’s.  They were the perfect drink for the beach.  For those of you that don’t know, go out and buy a big jug of Arizona’s Arnold Palmer half iced tea and half lemonade.  Pour out about a cup or so of the liquid (you’re free to drink it, it’s delicious).  Fill up with vodka.  Shake.  Enjoy.  Anyway, it’s beer time.

First up, Magic Hat’s Elder Betty

Sight:  A pale copper color, and a very confusing label.  I’m not sure if that’s a tree, a woman, maybe a long lost Georgia O’Keeffe painting…

Smell:  Lots of fruity aroma.  Fresh berries.

Taste:  Malty and sweet in the flavor.  It had a similar taste to a blueberry ale, but it was a little overdone.  Seemed to be too sweet to call it a weisse.

My overall grade:  C+

Big bottle:  Clown Shoes Vampire Slayer!

Sight:  Pitch black with a tan head, like a haunted cemetery… with a tan head.

Smell:  The aroma was malty and sweet.  It seemed slightly smoky and had some black licorice floating around in there.

Taste:  Very creamy mouthfeel. Lots of smoke.  A burnt coffee taste tossed in there for fun.  And a nice alcohol burn so you don’t get too carried away.  The finish was surprisingly easy considering everything that was happening to my mouth.

My overall grade:  B+

Now, I’m off to ice my feet.
